BACKGROUND
The story behind the tree
“Old Hara” is an informal name given to a particularly mysterious Great Basin bristlecone tree (Pinus longaeva), reported to be the oldest living non-clonal tree in the world at 5,062 years in 2010. The tree’s age hasn’t yet been verified, and the location was hidden to protect it from harm. In the Inyo National Forest, bristlecones are still being studied to better understand climate change and are themselves at risk.
Bristlecones have survived thousands of years against all odds, embodying hope and resilience. They remind us that life will continue to adapt even in the most challenging of conditions. We have much to learn from trees and other non-human forms of life, which we are deeply interconnected with.
